(January 21, 2024): Pocharam Lake Field Trip

Dear Fellow Birders,

Deccan Birders is delighted to invite you to join us for a birding trip to Pocharam Lake (https://maps.app.goo.gl/t6c5j2pCZUz9QDkr5), near Medak district, on 21-January-24 (Sunday)
Pocharam Lake is a part of the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary, a former hunting 

ground of the Nizam that was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the early 20th century. The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. Which is a dry deciduous forest with small ponds and streams. The lake was formed by damming the Allair river, a tributary of the Manjeera river, between 1916 and 1922. The lake and its surroundings provide a unique habitat for many water birds, such as Asian Open-bill, Bar-headed Geese, Ruddy Shelducks, Greater Flamingo, Greater Painted Snipe, Pin-tailed Snipe. Also, watch out for Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, Pacific Golden-Plover, Black-bellied Tern etc.. 
The sanctuary also has a variety of plant species, ranging from teak, bamboo, and pterocarpus to exotic wildflowers that bloom in different seasons. The lake is a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers, as it offers a glimpse of the rich biodiversity of the region. and different bird species.
The sanctuary is also a part of the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC), a citizen science program

me that monitors the status of waterbirds and wetlands across Asia and Australasia every January. The AWC is coordinated by Wetlands International and contributes to the conservation and management of wetlands and waterbirds at local, national, and international levels.

Those interested in joining the trip may meet at  

Apollo Pharmacy, Miyapur-Bollaram Road, Near Miyapur Cross Roads (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZRVB4abnf1cFqaWU9by 5:20 AM and will proceed ahead in a convoy by 5:30 AM sharp as it takes 2 and 1/2 hours to reach the final destination. Those who wish to join, can also converge at the 2nd meeting point opposite Dindigul Air Force Station (https://maps.app.goo.gl/LJ8ht67smfyMGz8w7), on Hyderabad-Narsapur Road at 6:00 AM for a quick morning fuelling (chai break) and start to our main destination. Participants can choose either of the converge points as per their geographical convenience.

As it is a day trip, breakfast and lunch options at the locations are minimal, please carry breakfast, lunch and enough water to keep yourselves hydrated.
